Coronary Artery Calcification Information Sheet

Coronary calcification is “hardening” of the arteries to the heart.

It indicates an increased risk of developing heart problems such as angina in the future.

It is often picked up on routine CT scans and is linked to ageing but it is important to control other risk factors, such as:

  • Smoking (please STOP)
  • Hypertension (BP must be controlled, generally <135/85)
  • High cholesterol (usually with a statin)
  • Weight loss, Diet (low fat, low sugar) and increased activity.

Lifestyle modifications are therefore essential to stop calcification progressing.

If you are not currently on a statin you will be contacted directly by the team at Liverpool Heart and Chest.

If you have not heard from Liverpool heart and chest within two weeks, please call 0151 600 1005.

If you are on a statin please submit an up-to-date BP reading via Patchs.
